About Healthy Bodies – Healthy Minds

LIS is committed to providing the very best education for our students both academically and with respect to lifelong skills and habits. To ensure that students are receiving healthy lifestyle skills and physical activity opportunities, our school has created the Healthy Bodies – Healthy Minds program based on scientific research and the advice of expert nutritionists.

The computer analogy – Understanding healthy nutrition

If you take a minute to picture the human body as a computer. The ‘hardware’ comprises all the things that the computer is made of. It’s RAM (memory), graphics and processor speed. This is analogous to the nutrition which makes up all of our body parts – the hard and tangible stuff.

Now think of ‘software’, these are the programs like Microsoft office, Windows 10, Mac, IOS, Android and Linux. This is the information, the knowledge, the teachings and the lessons students are exposed to.

If the computer is using poor hardware, and fuelled with a faulty battery, broken graphics card and cheap memory storage (poor nutrition), it doesn’t matter how great the software you use is, the hardware is really the core issue that needs to be dealt with first. We need to start with nutrition.

Why nutrition matters at school AND at home

  • “Food directly affects students’ health, learning, and lifetime wellness habits.”
  1. Improves learning: Healthy food is scientifically proven to boost students’ concentration, focus and cognitive function. A vast body of research shows that improved nutrition in schools leads to increased focus and attention, improved test scores and better classroom behaviour.
  2. Inspires healthy habits and lifestyle: Nutritious food helps students develop lifelong healthy eating habits. This has far reaching implications, on culture, family and community that students’ health and well-being are valued.
  3. Drive change in the marketplace: there is an opportunity for communities, especially schools, to drive the change they want to see in the world. As parents and educators, we have a responsibility to support businesses offering healthy foods to help create sustainable changes in the consumer markets.

What we are striving for

HBHM is an innovative nutrition program for students, parents and educators. It provides scientific research, set menu’s and a practical philosophy that will help guide future generations in the right direction.

1. We are asking for 2 things from parents: collaboration with the school in offering healthy food to their children

2. Providing the right food for their children at home too, we want the message to be consistent to really get the best results.
