Message from the Headteacher

Welcome to Lamai International School located on the beautiful island of Koh Samui in Thailand. At LIS, we follow the standard Cambridge Curriculum, teaching all core curricular subjects. We take pride in not only following this standard curriculum but implementing additional influential learning experiences into our teaching methods. We have put together a wonderful team made up of teachers from all over the world. They all possess special interests, qualities, and educational backgrounds that we have been able to utilize in our teaching practices here at LIS. At LIS, we feel it is important to teach students the knowledge they need to succeed as well as to provide them with a more diverse knowledge of the world around them and how to grow socially, emotionally and physically into a generation we can all be proud of. At LIS, we are not only an educational institution, we are a family that offers the support and guidance needed to ensure all our students feel like they can accomplish anything they put their minds to. At LIS, we strongly believe that every student matters and every moment counts!

Our mission is to provide students the knowledge, wisdom, and hands on practices to support an overall healthy lifestyle through obtaining a healthy body, a healthy mind, and a healthy environment.

About the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Program

LIS has implemented an Education for Sustainable Development program into the curriculum. ESD encourages changes in knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to enable a more sustainable and just society for all. It empowers learners to make informed decisions and take responsible actions towards environmental integrity, economic viability, a just society, and healthy living practices.

The LIS ESD program is based on the UN Agenda 2030 and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and includes an important component on Socio-Emotional Learning. Within this program, our students will develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values necessary to address sustainable development challenges. By working on a holistic approach to Sustainable Development, and with the involvement of parents and the local community, LIS aims at forming responsible citizens committed to a better world and a healthier self.

At LIS we believe in learning as a holistic process that goes beyond academic milestones. We want our students to use their brain, hearts, and hands to develop significant connections. We want them to put their knowledge into practice and act in ways that generate positive actions. We aim at nurturing a generation of students that are kind and empathetic to themselves, others, and the world.

Meet Our Teachers

Nam (Siriporn Wanyala)

Thai Teacher

Nam graduated from the University of Surat Thani with a Bachelor’s Degree in Science and Technology. She has been teaching Thai for over 8 years and made her way to LIS in September of 2019 to continue her teaching journey. Nam’s teaching philosophy is based on patience, understanding and one-on-one attention to help children reach their full potential. She believes that collaboration between each staff member will create a successful learning environment for all students.

Ball (Nattapol Aksorn)

Thai Teacher

Ball graduated from university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. He later received a teaching diploma before beginning his career as a Thai teacher. Ball has been working at international schools for over 7 years. His learning approach is heavily based on learning through play while focusing on each child’s individual needs and interests. Ball made his way to LIS in September 2019 and has since been a valuable member of the team.

Rut (Thawalrat Lomkalong)

Thai Teacher

Rut graduated from Ramkhamhaeng University in Bangkok with a degree in Business Administration. She began her teaching career in 2009 as a kindergarten teacher in Kanchanburi. Since then, she has taught at several different schools teaching children aged 2-16. “I chose this career because I love children and I care for them as if they are my own. I teach them to have good hearts”.

Robert Westfall

Music Teacher

Bob received his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Therapy from Capilano University in 2013. He then spent two years working as a music therapist in various facilities with people of all ages. Bob is a songwriter and performer and has been recording albums of original songs since 2005. His primary instruments are guitar, harmonica, piano, bass guitar, and vocals. He loves to make music and sing songs and realized it would be great to use his skills to inspire young artists in the making through teaching. Bob received his TESOL certificate in Vancouver, Canada, in 2014. He spent one year teaching English in South Korea, and moved to Thailand in late 2017 to continue his venture. On Koh Samui, Bob worked as an English language coach in hotels, played music in restaurants and is now teaching music at LIS. “I look forward to making a positive contribution to the students musical learning experiences and their lives overall. Music is a great form of expression and it is wonderful to see the students possess a passion for this art form.”

Nica Enriquez

ESL/Art Teacher

Nica attended university and graduated with a Pharmacy Degree. To pursue her teaching career she completed the TEFL course and TOEIC test obtaining certificates for both. She joined LIS in May 2018 as our ESL and Art Teacher. Nica loves teaching and building a rapport with children and is motivated by the belief that all children can be successful learners. Since she started teaching her love and passion for teaching has grown immensely. “It has been an extremely rewarding experience to see a student learn, grow and leave your classroom with a smile. Teaching is such an incredible honour and I believe it is about getting students to reach their full potential and allowing them to become amazing, unique individuals. I am beyond grateful to be a part of this beautiful, fun and growing community at LIS.”

Rebecca Tolputt

PE Teacher

Rebecca received her degree from Nottingham Trent University in Business Management and Entrepreneurship in 2016. Being an avid lover of sports her whole life, whilst at University she created and ran the first ever road cycling club, initiating her love for teaching sports. To further her passion for teaching sport she completed her Level Three Personal Trainer qualification and obtained her Class Instructor certificates. She worked as a fitness class and gym instructor at various facilities, while also running an all ladies cycling team on evenings and weekends. Rebecca believes that creating a positive relationship with sports at a young age is vital. “Creating these habits young, means children will carry their good relationship to sport with them into adulthood. Being active and healthy helps concentration during school and helps create a positive mentality. Sports should be fun, safe and a great way to develop healthy competition while learning good sportsmanship towards others.”

Braden Schroeder

Year 6

Braden Schroeder received his Bachelors Degree in Creative and Professional Writing from Missouri State University. Braden has a love for the English language and looks for any, and all opportunities to share that knowledge with those around him. Braden has dedicated the last five years to traveling in search of exploring different cultural perspectives to help create a new way of viewing the world, which in turn, has enhanced his professional development. Through his education and experiences Braden discovered his love for teaching and spreading his knowledge to the younger generation. Braden completed his teaching certification and has focused his attention on educating students and giving them access to a better English education. “I am truly honored to be able to share my knowledge and skillset with students from around the world and connect to them through the use of language here on Koh Samui.”

Joseph Lambert

Year 5/Content Creator

Joseph received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Music Technology from the University of Derby, England, in 2014. Joseph started working as a youth counsellor at international summer camps in the United States and Turkey, and later did volunteer work with children in Uganda. Throughout these experiences he realized his passion for teaching. He obtained his certificate to teach, which has now led him to LIS where he can continue to educate young minds. “I love making a positive impact on the lives of young people, observing their development, and guiding them on the path to a successful future.” Joe believes in the importance of young people’s first-hand exposure to numerous cultural customs and backgrounds. He encourages the students at LIS to appreciate and celebrate each other’s differences and promotes the learning environment within his classroom as being an inclusive family. “As a result, we take a small step in influencing a generation of young people to develop their moral of equality.”

Christie McLean

Year 4

Christie received her Bachelor of Commerce with Honours from Ryerson University in 2016 with a focus on Business and Communication. Upon graduating, Christie worked in community management within the technology industry in Toronto. Christie has always had a passion for teaching and working with children, which stemmed from studying and teaching English in France. Christie decided her true passion was teaching young minds and has since obtained her teaching certificate after deciding to pursue a career in early education. “I believe that an early education is the foundation for all of our futures.” Christie joined the LIS team and is thrilled to bring her passion for sustainability, diversity and creative writing to the school through her teaching practices and previous experiences working with children.

Krista Noonan

Year 3/Deputy Head

Krista received her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of Western Ontario in 2015. Ever since, she has dedicated her life to developing professionally as a teacher. After completing her teaching certification, Krista began her teaching career in Rayong, Thailand, where she taught English, with a specific focus on Phonics, to children of various ages. “The moment I stepped into the classroom, I knew I had chosen the right career. The energy from the students, and the opportunity to watch them develop and grow into unique individuals was the most rewarding experience I could imagine.” Krista made her way to LIS in May of 2016 and has since implemented the Jolly Phonics reading program and founded the LIS Green Team, which has begun transforming LIS into a sustainable and green environment for the students and staff. Krista’s passion and dedication to making the world a better place has a wonderful impact on everyone at LIS and the surrounding community of Koh Samui.

Paulina Santos

Year 2/Education for Sustainable Development Coordinator

Paulina received her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of Colima, Mexico. In 2013 she was selected as part of the Erasmus Mundus program, receiving her joint Masters Degree in Social Work two years later from four universities in Portugal, Norway, Sweden, and Uganda. Recently, she completed her second Masters in European Politics and Governance at the College of Europe in Belgium. Paulina is passionate about educational models that encourage critical thinking and promotes creativity and empathy. To date, she has participated in educational and social projects in 9 different countries and has worked as a teacher in Mexico, France, Uganda, and Thailand. She considers education as one of the keys to create an inclusive and equal world. Therefore, she has participated in different studies researching the impact of educational models on children, including Education for Sustainable Development which she is now implementing into the LIS curriculum schoolwide. Through her teaching, Paulina hopes to create an engaged community, motivate children to enjoy learning, and encourage them to work together to achieve their goals.

Myles Morrison

Year 1 Teacher/Student Well-Being Director

Myles received his Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and minor in Sociology from Arizona State University in 2013. He recently completed his Master’s Degree in Child Development at San Diego State University. He has dedicated his life to shaping the minds of the younger generations. He is passionate and focuses his research on understanding the importance of early childhood education professionals and their role in developing young children’s social and emotional competence. Myles has gained professional growth in a variety of social contexts in early childhood education. He worked as a preschool teacher for five years and a behavioral therapist for one year. Myles decided to move to Thailand in 2016 so he could gain a better understanding of children’s overall development on a cultural level. “I am truly grateful to be given the opportunity to teach at LIS. Moving to Samui and teaching at LIS has been one of the best decisions I have ever made.”

Teresa Caiado

Foundation 2

Teresa received her Bachelor Degree in Anthropology and her Masters Degree in Human Rights from New Lisbon University in Portugal. Teresa has been teaching foundation classes in Thailand since 2017 and is a committed and energetic homeroom teacher. Teresa believes in the importance of early childhood development. She aims to create lessons that are fun and engaging while optimizing the cognitive, emotional and social development of young children. Teresa’s pedagogical approach captivates students’ interests and motivation to learn through play. Teresa is currently completing her online Montessori Teacher Training for the primary age level with the United Montessori Association. She continues to follow her curiosity and passion for understanding the individuality of each child and personalizes her classes to meet their needs.

Amber Rondeau

Foundation 1

Amber received her Bachelor in Arts with Sociology in 2012 from Michigan State University. She has also studied as an Emergency Medical Technician/Firefighter, working five years on an ambulance and firetrucks responding to 911 emergencies. Following those studies, she has also obtained a 200-hour yoga teacher certification. Amber has gained experience working in Thai government schools in Southern Thailand, teaching ages 2-16. During that time, she coached multiple students and obtained national-level 1st place awards in English competitions. Amber has a passion for teaching with a kind and compassionate manner. She values a beautiful workspace that creates an inviting environment for the students to learn so they can receive a premium education. Learning through play is her main focal point with younger students. She incorporates Montessori-inspired learning stations, allowing the students to make their own choices, and to explore their imagination with infinite possibilities.

Dana Clumpus

Headmistress

Dana received her Degrees in Bachelor of Education and Child and Youth Studies from Brock University in 2014. Dana moved to Koh Samui, Thailand in 2016 from Ontario, Canada to fulfill the position as the Foundation teacher at Lamai International School to continue her passion for teaching young minds. Dana has various experiences working at different schools in all grades from Foundation to Year 6 as well as with many children of different learning abilities. In her current role as Headmistress Dana strives to maintain a fun and welcoming school environment while implementing various effective schoolwide techniques and strategies to cater to all students and their way of learning and grasping concepts taught throughout the year. Dana strongly believes it is important for students to explore their interests, imagination and creativity and encourages all students to use these skills in their everyday learning. She is very passionate about teaching young minds, as well as modelling and instilling good morals and manners into all students. Dana has a teaching philosophy that is strongly rooted in the development of the whole child; where the student’s physical, social, intellectual, and emotional development are all taken into consideration.

LIS & Community

A school is a place for students to learn and develop into capable, competent, confident and contributing members of society. A school is an integral part of a community. At LIS, we want to help grow our community from within. Students and teachers get involved as much as possible on local projects aimed at improving the community and lives of its people and the environment.
